10 favourite things…

March 9th, 2010

The Matches blog has just been given the Happy 101 award by super-chic Canned Fashion. The drill is,  list ten of my favourite things, before passing the award on to ten other award-worthy bloggers…

Voila…

1)  3.1 Phillip Lim - anything and everything. I would be quite happy if my wardrobe was made up of nothing else but him. My favourite piece at the moment has to be this sequinned shirt dress

2) Restaurant Georges, the unfeasibly stylish restaurant atop the Pompidou Centre, which has the most dazzling panoramic views of Paris and a striking, futuristic interior. It also happens to be where Natalia Vodianova met her husband Justin Portman…what a suitably sophisticated setting for the making of such a match!

3) Christopher Kane’s gingham dress with cut-out detail…sweetly demure with racy undertones. I loved the pretty-yet-perverted mood of his SS10 show, which was based on the idea of girls getting dressed to go to church…and then falling by the way side en route.

4)  My 12-week-old pug, Pericles.

5) Annina Vogel’s heartmeltingly beautiful pearl encrusted pendant. Decorated with a tiny horseshoe and arrow, it’s a lucky charm to love forever…

6) Diptyque candles - I have them in every room at home…

7) Wearing pretty, flippy dresses to chic summer soirees…this beautifully beaded Megan Park number will look exquisite teamed with softly woven gladiator sandals…

8 ) Long rambles across the rugged Yorkshire moorland, wearing my Lily and Lionel leather parka

9) Any Grace Kelly film (top pick - High Society) - I’m so excited about the V & A’s forthcoming exhibition of her wardrobe…

10) Richard Nicoll’s sumptuous silk blazer - I’ll work this season’s laidback luxe trend and wear mine with Stella McCartney’s softly tailored silk pants and statement sandals…

Red carpets and muted dresses

March 8th, 2010

Sartorially speaking, the 82nd Academy Awards was a somewhat muted affair. Other than the occasional requisite flash of letterbox red, stars stuck mostly to a plain palette of white, silver, black and midnight blue, embracing their softer side with swathes of ruffles and the most delicately cascading of trains (Yves Saint Laurent and Lanvin were among those behind the most elegant choices). And although Kathryn Bigelow’s landmark best director win made history and defined this sharply as a year for filmic feminism, on the red carpet, it was the men who shone, from the unsurprisingly impeccable Tom Ford (who also dressed Colin Firth, natch) to a suave Lanvin-clad Robert Downey, Jr. and Jake Gyllenhaal, debonair in Burberry.

Take a peek at our favourite looks. Until next year…

Kate Winslet was toned and respendent in Yves Saint Laurent

YSL was also the gown of choice for Best Director Kathryn Bigelow…

Robert Downey, Jr. rocks his Lanvin suit complete with natty bow tie (get yours here)

Jake Gyllenhaal (with sister Maggie) looks debonair in Burberry

Avatar’s Sigourney Weaver is another Lanvin lover, looking elegant in this sweeping red gown…

Matches Girl of the Month - Bip Ling

March 4th, 2010

Pretty Bip Ling is like a modern day, raven-haired Edie Sedgwick, a gamine little doll-like thing with a fabulous sense of style and an enviable aura of effortless cool. It’s no wonder that all eyes were on her (and her accessories) during the recent LFW.

TV presenter, gallerista, DJ, girl-about-town…this charming beauty has a very fashionable future ahead of her. Her very first job?  As a Saturday girl at Matches Wimbledon…could there be a chicer start to any girl’s career path?

1 .  What are you doing at the moment?

I have just finished my first job in TV presenting, for Lifefromfashionweek.com. I also DJ, deal art and sell LVSL via my blog www.bipsling.blogspot.com.

2.  Person you most admire?

I have always admired Frida Kahlo, I am intrigued by her. At the moment I am slightly obsessed with Abbey Lee and Coco Sumner.

3.  Best advice?

Drink lots of water.

4.  Style icon?

Coco Chanel.

My boyfriend Jonny - I don’t think I’ll ever get bored of him.

7.  Favourite place?

Home - I love to relax with my family.

8.  Party?

Peter Copping’s 40th in Brittany several years ago. That was LOVELY.

9.  Most treasured possession?

The crucifix necklace that I wear everyday and my collection of My Little Ponys - I really do LOVE THEM, that sounds so childish but it’s true!

10.  Your escape?

The Jungle!

11.  Future plans?

One day when I’m older and wiser (I hope!) I would like to start a magazine, or write a book about hair.

Balenciaga’s printed silk sandals

Lanvin’s Happy shoulder bag

Time for tennis (trousers)

March 2nd, 2010

E Tautz's tennis trousers are the height of polished off duty sophistication.

Take advantage of the sunshine today to look forward to summer and prep your warm weather wardrobe! E Tautz’s dapper cream tennis trousers are so elegant; they remind me of Evelyn Waugh novels, the way the boys used to dress at Oxford, and debonair 1920s film stars off duty.

Team with: Lanvin’s two-tone deck shoes, a natty bow tie…oh and a jug of Pimms. Yes it’s early March but a bit of sartorial forward-thinking never did anyone any harm…

Freda forever

Freda "Nona" silver leather jacket

I heart Freda’s super-chic  silver leather jacket! As you may know, I have this thing about metallics…
