ALICE’S WONDERLAND

Posted by Matchesfashion writer: Heath Brown December 1st, 2011

Talking to Alice Cicolini about her jewellery designs transports you into a rich decorative world of finely honed artistry from the most magical areas of ancient Asia. Her collection follows the traditional silk route from China, Tibet, India and Persia, back via Uzbekistan and then on to Constantinople.
“I’m inspired by the shapes and motifs found along the route,” Says the designer. “The architecture of richly embellished temples, the colours worn in traditional dress and the iconography of ancient cultures.”
After years as a respected curator, an author of authoritative design books and as Director of Arts & Culture for the British Council in India, Cicolini decided to add jewellery designer to her list of talents.
“I had an intellectual interest in the design of the region that evolved into more – on visits to the curious workshops and museums of Jaipur.” The designer told us. “ It then seemed natural for me to explore how to create something from this rich seam of imagery and workmanship.”
Fired by her new passion she enrolled on the Jewellery course at Central Saint Martins in London and graduated in 2009 with a Master’s Degree.
Since then, Alice Cicolini has become a most covetable name in jewellery and her exquisite handmade pieces are much sought after. Her use of rare skills employed by traditional artisans is part of her success. “I want to create a luxury object that respects the traditions and artistry of skilled craftsmen whose methods are fast dying out.”
One family she works with is one of the last in a tradition that use a delicate enamelling process called meenakari. “It’s a variation on the later European process of champlevé,” Cicolini explains, “where the design is carved into the material (here gold or silver) and then filled with enamel.” It is a process that requires a high degree of skill and artistry that originally came to India with the Mughals from Persia. “ It has been in the artisans’ family for over 250 years – adorning objects ordered by the likes of the Maharajas of Jaipur and Patiala.”
Thanks to Alice Cicolini, jewellery fit for a Maharaja can now be found at Matches where you too can be entranced by the beauty inspired by the ancient silk route and have the chance to own a unique piece of rare craftsmanship teamed with exquisite design.

GOAT: MATCHES EXCLUSIVE!

Posted by Matchesfashion writer: David Hayes November 15th, 2011

Goat founder, Jane Lewis

“I started Goat to fill the gaps in my own wardrobe,” admits Jane Lewis, the founder of the luxe brand that turns ten this year. “I simply wanted to make discreet and stylish clothes which would be timeless and versatile. Starting the label was an enormous challenge and very much a labour of love, but also incredibly exciting too.”

It is a labour of love that has more than paid off: Lewis now counts Sienna Miller, Kirsten Dunst, Elle Mcpherson and Gwyneth Paltrow amongst her high profile fans.

MEN’S TAILORING WEEK: RAKE

Posted by Matchesfashion writer: David Hayes October 13th, 2011

Day Four of Men’s Tailoring Week belongs to the rather fabulous Clive Darby of ultra-hip London label Rake. We caught up with him to talk about what’s cool now – and just what was acceptable in the 80s.

*What is your first memory of wearing a suit? Did your father wear suits?

My first memory is when I started working as a Saturday boy in a gent’s outfitters back home in Derby and then at school when I was in the sixth form. My father would all ways wear a suit. He had a sense of pride in his appearance and this was handed down.

MEN’S TAILORING WEEK GET’S BOW-TIE-TASTIC!

The first day of Men’s Tailoring Week was rounded off rather nicely with specially prepared Lanvin ‘Bow-tie Extraordiare’ cocktails from the pop up bar, courtesy of new private members club Dorsia – that’s two shots of Absolute Vodka, peach, jasmine, blackberry and fresh lemon juice served over handfulls of crushed - complete with a natty bow-tie finishing touch. Delicious.

Dorsia's Lanvin cocktail - compete with natty bow-tie

Dorsia's pop up bar lines them up

In fact the whole night was what you could call ‘bow-tie-tastic’.

MEN’S TAILORING WEEK: E.Tautz

Posted by Matchesfashion writer: David Hayes October 11th, 2011

The second day of Men’s Tailoring Week belongs to E.Tautz. We asked British Menswear Designer of the Year, Patrick Grant, the label’s Creative Director, to tell us a little about what makes him tick.

*What is your first memory of wearing a suit? My grandmother got me a little blue suit to wear at the wedding of a friend of my parents. My mum hated it and was delighted when a bridesmaid pushed me in the pond and I had to change. I don’t remember that myself. My first memory was pretty dull. I had to wear a suit to chapel at school on a Sunday. It was a 2 show 3 double breasted in charcoal herringbone with a blue over-stripe.
